The Performance Studies Focus Group seeks proposals for performances,
installations, roundtable discussions, panels (and yes, even papers) for
the 1999 ATHE conference, to be held in Toronto, Ontario, July 28-31.
There is no set theme for the conference, and we welcome proposals on a
wide variety of topics in the areas of live art and performance (broadly
defined). In the past, the Performance Studies Focus Group has sponsored
conference sessions in such areas as cultural performance, musicology,
critical pedagogy, performance and politics, ritual studies, queer and
feminist performance theory, and performativity in cyberspace.
For the 1999 conference, we are especially interested in expanding the
range of presentations to include greater attention to Canadian subject
matter, as well as proposals for sessions that interrogate concepts of
nationhood or examine the role of performance in constituting (and/or subverting)
national identities, among other topics. We are particularly interested
in receiving proposals for events that are performative and dynamic. Our
selection process will privilege abstracts outlining sessions that employ
innovative, interactive formats for communicating knowledge -- performances,
installations, roundtable discussions, poster sessions, interactive tours,
or presentations that invite engagement and discussion of ideas presented
in brief papers.
The deadline for receipt of proposals, either for complete sessions or
single projects, is November 1, 1999. For submission forms and additional
information, please contact: Lisa Wolford lwolfor@bgnet.bgsu.edu Department

MATC Celebrates the Fin-de-Siecle Mid-American Theatre Conference Theatre History Symposium March 1999
Cognizant of the rapid dawning of a new century, the MATC recently celebrated
three hundred years of accomplishment in American theatre in order to recognize
and ruminate upon previous significant events. This year, the MATC invites
papers that discuss the fin-de-siecle, essays that investigate the complex
patterns and the theoretical/historical issues that emerge as one century
turns to another. We are interested in papers that deal with the dichotomies
that result from such material and ideological paradigm shifts: beginnings
and endings, death and rebirth, crisis and resolution,19th century vs.
20th century (20th vs. 21st), and retrospection vs. progressive or prophetic
vision. We also welcome papers that somehow reflect upon the 20th anniversary
that the MATC celebrates in 1999 through an exploration of how theatre
scholarship and academia fits within the broader topic of the fin-de-siecle.
Essays might consider the ways in which temporal transitions or ideological
shifts affect the nature of the profession, whether more traditional historical
approaches will triumph over high theory in the next century, in what ways
theatre departments will be affected by larger institutional discussions
concerning the abolition of tenure, and other pedagogical/professional
issues. Please send us a one-page abstract with a cover letter by December
1, 1998.
We will notify you by January 15th, 1999, if your proposal is accepted.
Papers will be delivered in oral presentations of fifteen to twenty minutes,
so speakers should write with these limitations in mind. Please include
a request for any needed audio-visual equipment in your proposal. Send
abstracts to either: Elizabeth Reitz Mullenix Illinois State University

Canada On The Threshold Of The New Millennium Russian Association
for Canadian Studies,
The Fifth International Biennial Conference. Moscow, 24-27 June, 1999:
The Conference which marks the Tenth Anniversary of the Russian Association
of Canadian Studies, will also be the last such gathering of this century
and thus would be an excellent opportunity to take stock of Canada's past
and look ahead to its future, concentrating on Canada's major economic,
political and cultural developments.
A plenary meeting on the first day of the Conference would enable everyone
to hear and discuss papers on the key issues. On the second day, participants
would be able to discuss more specific issues in theme-based meetings.
We welcome you to send your abstracts (up to 2 double-space typed pages
in English) and C.V. by February 1, 1999 to: RACS-99 Conference
Organizing Committee 2/3 Khlebny per., Moscow 121814 Russia Fax: (095)

decision on the acceptability of abstracts will be taken and invitations
will be send out by February 15, 1999. RACS is doing its best to get enough
funds to cover all expenses for hotel accommodation and meals of those
who will receive our invitation to the Conference. In case of coming with
a spouse, a participant is expected to defray all relevant additional expenses.
Theatre Programmes Forum: At the last ACTR/ARTC conference, the
Professional Concerns Committee held a special session on the viability
of organizing a nationwide forum within the Association for all chairs
and directors of theatre programmes at the university and college level.
This session was well-attended, and as a result the Association and the
PCC will further pursue this possibility during our next conference at
Sherbrooke/Bishop's.
This will include a panel discussion on an issue of concern to all members
of the Association and to those who run theatre studies programmes, as
well as a meeting of potential members of such a forum. We want to encourage
as many chairs and directors of theatre and drama programmes to attend
as possible, and would appreciate it if readers of this Newsletter would
contact their chairs about this session and gathering, as details are announced,
encourage them to support the Association in this effort--and contact us
with their email addresses.
