| A one-man cultural industry: educator, actor and long-time
arts adminstrator in his career with Alberta Culture from 1956 to1982.
Kaasa began his acting career at Studio Theatre while taking summer courses
related to his teaching career. In 1954 he won a scholarship to study
music and speech in London, where among other achievements he graduated
from the Central School of Speech and Drama.
While working as a career civil servant, he performed over fifty stage roles, mainly at the amateur level, but crossing over into professional roles at the Citadel and other Edmonton theatres. When he performed Lady Bracknell for Northern Light and the Phoenix theatre in 1983, he performed on the stage named in his honour at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. He also worked regulary in radio and television, and co-authored (with G.B. Peacock) a book called Adventures In Acting. While Kaasa tactfully points to the contributions of his staff and sympathetic politicians such as Peter Lougheed and Horst Schmidt, he was himself a nationally recognized arts administrator who helped develop and implement cultural policy in Alberta for almost thirty years. He was also in demand as a speaker on the arts and arts policy throughout his career. On "retirement" (at which time he was lauded as an "indefatiguable" champion of the arts and an "inspiration" to his department and co-workers) he founded a school for speech (still in operation) and worked as a vocal coach at Grant MacEwan College. |

Kaasa a été reconnu à l'échelle nationale pour
son apport au développement et à la mise en oeuvre d'une
politique culturelle en Alberta. Cette politique a ainsi permis de développer
un goût pour les arts de la scène à travers la province
et de créer une formule de subvention, qui fut établie pour
le milieu amateur et par la suite pour les professionels.
Au cours de sa carrière, il a été porte-parole des arts et de la politique culturelle. M. Kaasa a débuté sa carrière de comédien dans les premières années de Studio Theatre à l'Université d'Alberta. En 1954, il a gagné une bourse d'étude pour étudier la musique et le discours à Londres, en Angleterre, où il gradua de la Central School of Speech and Drama. Pendant qu'il était fonctionnaire, il a obtenu plusieurs rôles professionnels dans les théâtre d'Edmonton. En 1983, pendant qu'il jouait Lady Bracknell pour Northern Light et Phoenix Theatres, il jouait dans la salle nommée en son honneur au Northern Alberta Jubilee. Il a aussi travaillé régulièrement à la radio et à la télévision. Il est co-auteur d'un livre intitulé Adventures in Acting. Après sa retraite, M. Kaasa a fondé une école
de discours, et il a travaillé comme entraîneur vocal au Grant
MacEwan College à Edmonton.
