Staging the Pacific Province 2: Theatre in British Columbia
This second conference of its kind aims to bring together practitioners,
students, academics, special speakers and the public to discuss and celebrate
theatre in British Columbia. The conference corresponds with the celebration
of the 50th season in the University of British Columbia's Frederic Wood
Theatre.
The conference will be held at: The University of British Columbia
Vancouver, British Columbia October 12 to 14, 2001
We encourage participation from a wide variety of disciplines such as
(but not limited to) theatrical history, anthropological studies, B.C.
history, literary criticism and theory, cultural and interdisciplinary
studies, architectural analysis, economics of theatre, theatre training,
and broadcasting/media. Some suggested general areas for panel and presentation
proposals are as follows:
Urban theatre
Rural theatre
"Serious" theatre
First Nations performance and theatre
Youth theatre
Commercial theatre
Amateur theatre
Queer theatre
Women's theatre
Theatre from immigrant communities
Theatre education
Non-English language theatre
Theatre from the mainstream and the "margins'
Practitioners up front and behind the scenes
The conference welcomes research on historical as well as contemporary
materials, practical as well as theoretical approaches. Performances, demonstrations
and use of audio- visual materials are particularly encouraged.
Deadline for submission of proposals is Friday, September 1,
2000.
We request individual presentation proposals of 250 words maximum,
and panel proposals of 500 words maximum. A collection of essays from the
Conference will be published by Talonbooks.
