Song of this Place is a play about Emily Carr by the verteran actor
and trailblazer, Joy Coghill. In her paper, Coghill recalls her struggles
as she wrestled with the spirit of this formidable woman who managed to
overcome insuperable obstacles to become Canada's most famous woman artist.
What is it about this woman, the paper asks, that has inspired so many
other artists to create? In Song of this Place Coghill confronts the icon
face on. The play takes shape as the story of an actress who wants to play
Emily Carr and Emily refuses to let her. Born of the struggle, Coghill
says, was "a new form of theatre that made extraordinary demands and was
deeply satisfying."
